Special rules for the MSc diploma thesis (Master’s thesis I)
The MSc diploma thesis consists of two semesters. The objectives and requirements of the first semester are detailed below.
During the diploma thesis process, the topic must be selected at the beginning of the first semester. Students may choose from the announced topics or propose their own topic with the selected supervisor.
The thesis supervisor may be a faculty lecturer, researcher, or PhD student. In the case of a company (“industry”) thesis, an external (company) consultant may only be appointed together with an internal supervisor. In this case, the internal supervisor assists with the university’s administrative procedures.
For an “industry” thesis, the company providing the topic may request restricted/confidential handling of the thesis; the procedure is described in a later section.
The deadline for selecting the topic is the end of the 1st teaching week.
The aim of the semester is to analyse the chosen topic, conduct a literature review, and define the concrete development task. Accordingly, the topic must be specified in detail by the end of the semester at the latest.
At a minimum, during the semester, the student must prepare the chapters of the thesis covering the literature review, theoretical background, and a survey of current technologies. With adequate progress, development work may already be started in the first semester. Any deviation from this requires the supervisor’s approval.
The student is required to consult with the supervisor at least biweekly.
A prerequisite for awarding the grade (course completion/signature) is that the student has prepared the diploma thesis chapters prescribed by the supervisor. The course grade is determined by the supervisor.
Formatting requirements for the diploma thesis
The recommended length of the diploma thesis is 55–70 pages. The thesis should be prepared in Word or LaTeX; in the latter case, Overleaf is recommended.
The submitted thesis must be signed. Qualified electronic signatures, for example via DÁP, as well as handwritten signatures, are accepted, including scanned signed documents or signature images inserted into the document.
The student must prepare an approximately one-page abstract of the thesis in English.
The thesis and the abstracts must be submitted electronically via Moodle only. No printed copy is required.
Review (Assessment)
The thesis must be reviewed. A reviewer may only be a professional holding a university degree. The reviewer is appointed by the supervisor.
For an industry topic, the external supervisor may propose a reviewer.
The reviewer and the supervisor each provide a separate recommendation for the evaluation of the thesis/diploma thesis. The final grade of the diploma thesis is decided by the final examination committee.
The review must be provided to the student at least 5 days before the thesis defense.
Restricted/confidential handling of the thesis
The company providing the topic must submit a request for restricted/confidential handling of the thesis. Only the justifications specified in the Code of Studies and Exams of BME can be accepted; the relevant justification must be selected from the following:
“(2) Handling with restricted access may only be approved if the bachelor’s or master’s thesis includes any of the following:
a) classified information (Act CLV of 2009 on the Protection of Classified Information);
b) trade secrets or protected knowledge/know-how (Section 1 of Act LIV of 2018 on the Protection of Trade Secrets);
c) patentable inventions or patentable biotechnological inventions (Act XXXIII of 1995 on the Protection of Inventions by Patents);
d) protectable utility models (Act XXXVIII of 1991 on the Protection of Utility Models);
e) protectable designs (Act XLVIII of 2001 on the Protection of Designs);
f) topographies of microelectronic semiconductor products (Act XXXIX of 1991 on the Protection of Topographies of Microelectronic Semiconductor Products); or
g) trademarks and geographical indications (Act XI of 1997 on the Protection of Trademarks and Geographical Indications).”
Restricted handling may be requested for up to 5 years. After the request is approved, an information protection agreement must be concluded. For this purpose, in addition to the request, the company is asked to provide the following data to the Department coordinator:
- Name of the organization
- Registered office of the organization
- Tax number of the organization
- Registration number of the organization
- Representative of the organization (authorized to sign: name and position)
- Contact person’s name on behalf of the organization
- Student’s name
- Student’s Neptun code
- Student’s programme/major
- Duration of information protection (max. 5 years)
- Number of copies requested by the organization
After the information protection agreement is concluded, only the lecturers who have signed the agreement’s annex (during the period of restricted handling) and the members of the final examination committee may access the thesis.

Final Examination
MSc final-exam subjects: the three courses must be selected partly from the professional knowledge subjects and partly from the specialization subjects, such that each course is worth at least 3 credits, and the combined knowledge content of the three courses corresponds to at least 15 credits in total.
The student proposes the courses, which must be approved by the supervisor.
It is also possible to take the final exam in course groups.
After completing the subject examinations, the results must be presented to the committee in a presentation. The thesis defence, except for those under restricted/confidential handling, is public.
